MEET THE GTR TITANS

Winning The Big Rail Diversity Challenge takes more than individual skill. It requires communication, collaboration, problem solving and the ability to bring different perspectives together.

For GTR, this approach was reflected in the composition of the TITANS team.

Like GTR's other teams, the TITANS brought together a diverse group of colleagues across roles, backgrounds, skills and locations. The team included people working across different areas of the business, including Station Managers, Ticket Office Clerks, Engineers, Sales Assistants and Driver Line Managers.

GTR was committed to creating teams that reflected the diversity of its workforce, with a 50/50 gender split alongside representation across race and ethnicity, geographic locations and roles.

And on the day, that diversity proved to be a strength.

“We were keen that every team was as diverse as possible, and it showed.”

WHY GOVIA THAMESLINK RAILWAY ENTERED

Three Teams. One Shared Purpose.

The Big Rail Diversity Challenge 2026 marked GTR's third time taking part in the event.

Following the success of previous years, the organisation wanted to give even more colleagues the opportunity to experience the challenge.

GTR had entered one team in its first year, followed by two teams the following year. For 2026, the organisation went all out with three teams competing, allowing colleagues from a wider range of roles and backgrounds to get involved.

The motivation was simple: bring more people from across the business together and give more frontline colleagues the opportunity to take part.

THE POWER OF DIVERSITY

Different Roles. Different Perspectives. One Team.

One of the defining features of the GTR TITANS was the variety of experience within the team.

From frontline colleagues to technical and management roles, the team brought together people with different professional experiences and perspectives.

Station Managers

Bringing leadership and operational experience.

Ticket Office Clerks

Bringing frontline customer knowledge and communication skills.

Engineers

Bringing technical thinking and problem solving.

Sales Assistants

Bringing customer focused experience and commercial awareness.

Driver Line Managers

Bringing operational leadership and people management experience.

This cross section of roles demonstrates exactly what makes diversity in the rail industry so valuable: bringing people with different experiences together to solve problems, communicate effectively and work towards a shared goal.

MORE THAN A COMPETITION

Bringing the Railway Together

For GTR, participation in The Big Rail Diversity Challenge was about more than competing for the trophy.

Having competed in previous years, the organisation already understood the value of the event. In 2026, the goal was to expand that experience across more of the business, particularly by giving a wider range of frontline colleagues the opportunity to participate.

The event provided an opportunity for colleagues who may not normally work together to step outside their usual roles, build relationships and collaborate in a completely different environment.

A chance to:

Collaborate

Work alongside colleagues from different areas of the business.

Connect

Build relationships across teams, roles and locations.

Challenge

Step outside the everyday working environment.

Learn

Gain new perspectives from colleagues with different experiences.

Celebrate

Recognise the value that diversity brings to the railway.

BEFORE THE EVENT

Excitement, Nerves and High Expectations

With previous experience of The Big Rail Diversity Challenge, GTR knew there would be plenty of excitement ahead of the 2026 event.

There were also, naturally, some nerves.

Having already competed in previous years, the teams knew what to expect from the day, but the scale of GTR's involvement made 2026 particularly exciting.

With three teams representing the organisation, more colleagues than ever had the opportunity to experience the challenge.

And as the TITANS would soon discover, the day would exceed even their expectations.

THE BIG WIN

Expectations Were Exceeded

The GTR TITANS didn't just take part in The Big Rail Diversity Challenge 2026.

They won it.

Their victory demonstrated the strength of bringing together people with different roles, experiences and perspectives and giving them a shared challenge to overcome.

What started with excitement and nerves ended with GTR TITANS being crowned The Big Rail Diversity Challenge 2026 winners.

**Diversity brought them together.

Teamwork took them to the top.**

“We wanted to expand that experience across more of the business, for a wider range of colleagues from the frontline.”

“With our big win, our expectations were definitely exceeded.”

WHY IT MATTERS

Diversity Drives Stronger Teams

The GTR TITANS story demonstrates why diversity and inclusion remain so important across the railway.

When people with different backgrounds, experiences, skills and perspectives come together, they can approach challenges from different angles and learn from one another.

The Big Rail Diversity Challenge provides a unique opportunity for rail organisations to put those principles into practice through team building, collaboration and friendly competition.

Different perspectives. Shared goals. Stronger teams.

Could Your Organisation Be Next?

The Big Rail Diversity Challenge brings together teams from across the railway for a unique day of mental, physical and skill based challenges, designed to encourage collaboration, communication and teamwork.
