Stadler

The Big Rail Diversity Challenge

Stadler provides a wide range of rolling stock and associated rail services, including signalling and maintenance. With clients all over the world, we are at the forefront of green technology and a market leader in the rack-and-pinion sector. Safety, reliability, durability and comfort are at the heart of our offering. Stadler products and services are designed to promote operational efficiency and enhance the customer experience. The company has sold more than 12,000 vehicles in 49 countries and has 15,000 employees, based all over the world. It was founded in 1942 in Switzerland, where Stadler has its headquarters.

Over the last decade, Stadler’s presence in the UK has grown dramatically. In 2023, the Liverpool City Region started introducing the 53-strong fleet of METRO trains on to Merseyrail, with all trains now in passenger service. Transport for Wales is in the process of rolling out 35 FLIRTs and will soon introduce the 36 CITYLINKs it has ordered. Eighteen METRO trains for Glasgow Subway were brought in last year. Nexus is currently rolling out 46 METRO trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro. Fifty-eight new FLIRTs for the Greater Anglia network were delivered from 2018. The company will supply an initial batch of ten Class 93 tri-mode locomotives for Rail Operations UK, as well as 30 Class 99 bi-mode Co’Co’ locomotives to Beacon Rail and GB Railfreight.

Stadler Rail Service UK Limited is a subsidiary of Stadler Rail, providing full service contracts in Norwich, Liverpool and Newcastle. There are technical support and spares supply agreements in place in Cardiff and Glasgow. Four hundred people work for Stadler in the UK, in mainly skilled or highly skilled jobs.

Supporting Women in Rail is a testament to Stadler’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse workforce. By participating in initiatives like this, we are actively contributing to the creation of a more equitable industry where everybody, regardless of gender, can thrive.

Women in Rail is dedicated to empowering women within the rail sector, providing them with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities needed to support them in their careers. Our endorsement of this organisation enables us to break down barriers and create a more balanced and representative workforce.

Stadler’s participation in this initiative reflects our core values of equality, respect, and inclusion. We believe that a diverse workforce leads to better decision-making, increased creativity, and a stronger, more resilient company. Together, we can build a brighter future for the rail industry and ensure that it is a place where everyone can succeed.
